YouTube Announces Your Film Festival
By Michelle Kung
In its latest effort to unite the worlds of online video and the arts, YouTube said on Thursday it was launching an online film festival in conjunction with the Venice Film Festival and Scott Free, the production company of filmmakers Ridley and Tony Scott. Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, has signed on as the event’s sponsor.
The competition, dubbed Your Film Festival, is an expansion on the Scott Free-produced documentary “Life in a Day,” which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last year and featured a pastiche of video clips woven into a feature film by director Kevin Macdonald.
The new competition invites content creators to submit 15-minute videos in any format, style and genre to YouTube between the dates of February 2 and March 31. Scott Free will then whittle down the submissions to 50 semifinalists. YouTube users will vote to determine 10 finalists, whose work will be featured at the 69th Annual Venice International Film Festival in August. A jury-determined grand prize winner will walk off with $500,000 production grant, as well as a development deal with Scott Free.
Mr. Scott, whose next film “Prometheus” opens in June, said in a statement that he was a supporter of the online film festival because he too began his career in short film-making and was eager to help new directors find an entry point into the industry.
